Orhan Pamuk， Turkey's most famous living author， Nobel Laureate and recipient of many awards， has returned with another blisteringly good novel。 And one that， despite being set at the very beginning of the twentieth century， and on a fictional [but very real] island， is incredibly relevant to today。There is a plague。 The island of Mingheria - the twenty-ninth state of the Ottoman Empire -located in the eastern Mediterranean between Crete and Cyprus， is our setting and we open with a little bit o Orhan Pamuk， Turkey's most famous living author， Nobel Laureate and recipient of many awards， has returned with another blisteringly good novel。 And one that， despite being set at the very beginning of the twentieth century， and on a fictional [but very real] island， is incredibly relevant to today。There is a plague。 The island of Mingheria - the twenty-ninth state of the Ottoman Empire -located in the eastern Mediterranean between Crete and Cyprus， is our setting and we open with a little bit of clever meta-narrative before plunging into the story。Pamuk brings to life this world in vivid detail。 I could see and hear and smell this place; the details in Pamuk's writing really make his work swell with beauty。 For such a long novel， this one flew by for me。 At the end it was the minor characters， the little details that lingered in the memory。Thanks to the publishers and Netgalley for the ARC。 。。。more

Jako dobar roman， ali ispod Pamukovog kvaliteta。 Nema snažnog pripovjedača koji razgovara sa čitaocima， već je tu istoričarka koja vrlo površno i bez dublje analize prelazi preko nekih ozbiljnih tema， koje Pamuk obično minuciozno obrađuje。 Ključna tema epidemije je s druge strane odlično inkorporisana u poluroman- poluistoriju。 Zapravo， može se reći da je ovo najduži umjetnički esej koji je napisan， a ne roman。 Pamuk se toliko uživio u ulogu istoričarke koja slučajno postaje spisateljica， da je Jako dobar roman， ali ispod Pamukovog kvaliteta。 Nema snažnog pripovjedača koji razgovara sa čitaocima， već je tu istoričarka koja vrlo površno i bez dublje analize prelazi preko nekih ozbiljnih tema， koje Pamuk obično minuciozno obrađuje。 Ključna tema epidemije je s druge strane odlično inkorporisana u poluroman- poluistoriju。 Zapravo， može se reći da je ovo najduži umjetnički esej koji je napisan， a ne roman。 Pamuk se toliko uživio u ulogu istoričarke koja slučajno postaje spisateljica， da je vrlo smišljeno pisao "nespretno"。Dva ključna elementa nedostaju da bi ova knjiga bila vrhunska: 1）Orhan Pamuk 2） Audiatur et altera pars kada su u pitanju stavovi o islamu。。。 。。。more

My thanks to NetGalley and the publisher Knopf Doubleday Publishing Group for an advanced copy of this novel on a illness， consequences， religion， love and murder。 Too soon， is a phrase used by people who want to not think of something painful， or for politicians not to have their ineffectiveness pointed out to them as the same problems keep arising。 Sometimes fiction can be too soon。 A book about a plague on an island who decide to treat the illness based on their own ideas and research， while My thanks to NetGalley and the publisher Knopf Doubleday Publishing Group for an advanced copy of this novel on a illness， consequences， religion， love and murder。 Too soon， is a phrase used by people who want to not think of something painful， or for politicians not to have their ineffectiveness pointed out to them as the same problems keep arising。 Sometimes fiction can be too soon。 A book about a plague on an island who decide to treat the illness based on their own ideas and research， while ignoring sound medical advice。 That is a very big too soon for a lot of readers。 Thankfully we have writers who are brave enough to go there is never too soon， just how soon can we face these troubles， and make sure they never happen again。 Nights of Plague by Orhan Pamuk， winner of the Noble Prize in Literature， and translated by Ekin Oklap is a book about sickness， health， murder， politics and how all these can make an ongoing tragedy far worse。 The time is 1900 in the Ottoman Empire。 The Sultan has sent his niece and her new husband a doctor of infectious diseases， to China as part of a new mission and fact finding trip and also to keep her far away from the court after arresting her father。 Their ship stops at the island of Mingheria， where the population is divided between Muslim and Orthodox Greeks。 Tensions are usually high， but are now plague has come to the island， and both blame the other for causing it。 The Sultans sends his best doctor to help with quarantine， but being a Orthodox Christian， is ignored by half the population， and a murder is committed that begins to split the island even worse。 After another doctor， the Sultan's niece's husband tries to get another quarantine going， things decay even further leaving the Sultan no choice but to begin a naval blockade， leaving the island to fend for itself。 The book is very big， with a lot of characters， and a lot of subplots。 Corrupt government， ignorant people declaring on health issues， a murder mystery， a medical mystery， the role of women， the role of religion， world affairs。 Pamuk does a good job in keeping the story going， but the writing style and the distance he keeps from the characters might be a little hard to adjust too， as is the scholarly way in which he sometimes writes。 Also the subject matter， a plague and how government and religion get in the way of dealing with it， might not be the escapist fiction that people want these days。 However this is a big， sprawling book that does work， once the reader gives it a chance。 The history is very intriguing， the characters， even the villains have a motivation for what they do， and the writing is very fluid， and in some places quite beautiful。 There is a lot going on in the book， I'll be the first to admit that。 However anyone with interest in Pamuk's other works， or enjoy historical fiction， or just want something to read something huge that will absorb their interest from what is going on in the world， or get through snow storms in winter， will not be disappointed。 To paraphase the Smiths maybe Too Soon is Now。 。。。more

This book is about Princess Pakize， daughter of a deposed sultan， her husband， and the Royal Chemist， Bonkowski Pasha， as they travel to Mingheria amid an outbreak of plague。 I can’t really tell you much more than that， because I didn’t get very far before giving up on it。My issue is with the writing style。 Keep in mind that I was reading an English translation， so I don’t know if this was a translation issue or if the original story was written in the same way， but I couldn’t get on board with This book is about Princess Pakize， daughter of a deposed sultan， her husband， and the Royal Chemist， Bonkowski Pasha， as they travel to Mingheria amid an outbreak of plague。 I can’t really tell you much more than that， because I didn’t get very far before giving up on it。My issue is with the writing style。 Keep in mind that I was reading an English translation， so I don’t know if this was a translation issue or if the original story was written in the same way， but I couldn’t get on board with at at all。 The author has tried to combine a historical piece with a novel， and I personally don’t think it has worked。 The writing is much too heavy and would certainly work better in a specialist historical textbook than in a hist-fic novel。 I was about eight chapters in （which isn’t far， because this is a long book） when I realised I had absorbed exactly nothing and had no idea who was who or what any of them were doing。 I got absolutely no enjoyment from reading this book， and so decided to spare myself and not continue。Perhaps this novel would be better suited to more enthusiastic readers of historical fiction than me。I received a copy of this book from the publisher in exchange for an honest review。 。。。more

Orhan Pamuk has produced an epic novel， that in many ways belies description ; it would appear he seeks to use the context of a plague on a fictional Greek，island to explore the state of our wider world in particular during the era of Covid。 Pamuk is a legendary writer and the precision detail he provides to describe the minutiae of politics and the Machiavellian ways in which men wish to exploit society for their own power is extraordinary。 The story initially focuses around three characters ;P Orhan Pamuk has produced an epic novel， that in many ways belies description ; it would appear he seeks to use the context of a plague on a fictional Greek，island to explore the state of our wider world in particular during the era of Covid。 Pamuk is a legendary writer and the precision detail he provides to describe the minutiae of politics and the Machiavellian ways in which men wish to exploit society for their own power is extraordinary。 The story initially focuses around three characters ;Princess Pakize， the daughter of a deposed sultan，;her husband - Doctor Nuri-and the Royal Chemist， Bonkowski Pasha and their arrival on the island of Mingheria but following the murder of Bonkowski Pasha， the Princess and her husband are compeled to stay on the island to，help with the impending crisis of a plague and the resulting political upheaval between Muslims and Christians and factions within the political society。 The tale is told as though recounting a true historical event mak’h references to diaries kept by the Princess。 There is a sense of reading Garcia- Marquez in the way sub characters and their subsequent lives intertwine around the main plot。 This is not an “easy “ read in that it demands attention and the intricacy of plotting the overall narrative is complex but ultimately rewarding 。Pamuk is an extraordinary writer who clearly wants to use his craft to express a broader message or reflection upon modern life- and in this novel， he truly succeeds 。。。more

Orhan Pamuk has been on my to-read list for a long while。This book did not disappoint。 I kept forgetting that Mingheria was not a real state。There was lots of real history in the novel， I found out lots about the Ottoman Empire that I did not know。I could actually imagine life in Mingheria， but was glad not to be there whilst the plague was rife。Brilliant characters， great imagination， and I guess that although non-fiction lots of research was required。Just a little too long for my taste， but I Orhan Pamuk has been on my to-read list for a long while。This book did not disappoint。 I kept forgetting that Mingheria was not a real state。There was lots of real history in the novel， I found out lots about the Ottoman Empire that I did not know。I could actually imagine life in Mingheria， but was glad not to be there whilst the plague was rife。Brilliant characters， great imagination， and I guess that although non-fiction lots of research was required。Just a little too long for my taste， but I did like the fact that the narrator was involved with the author and the storyline。I will definitely be looking out for more of his books。Thanks to Orhan for a great novel and my thanks to the publisher for an advanced copy for honest review。 。。。more

Sıkı bir Orhan Pamuk okuruyum。 Benim için edebiyatımızın en önemli yazarıdır ya da öyleydi。 Romanlarının hepsini okudum ve her birini az veya çok kendi çerçevesinde sevmişimdir。 Büyük bir keyifle okumuşumdur。 En zorlu romanı Kara Kitap'ta bile sıkıntılı hâllerime rağmen hissettiğim edebiyat lezzetini unutmam。 O yüzdendir ki Veba Geceleri'nin vasatın altında bir roman olduğunu， şimdilik Orhan Pamuk edebiyatının da tek zayıf romanı olduğunu gönül rahatlığıyla iddia edebilirim。 Bu roman için bana h Sıkı bir Orhan Pamuk okuruyum。 Benim için edebiyatımızın en önemli yazarıdır ya da öyleydi。 Romanlarının hepsini okudum ve her birini az veya çok kendi çerçevesinde sevmişimdir。 Büyük bir keyifle okumuşumdur。 En zorlu romanı Kara Kitap'ta bile sıkıntılı hâllerime rağmen hissettiğim edebiyat lezzetini unutmam。 O yüzdendir ki Veba Geceleri'nin vasatın altında bir roman olduğunu， şimdilik Orhan Pamuk edebiyatının da tek zayıf romanı olduğunu gönül rahatlığıyla iddia edebilirim。 Bu roman için bana hitap etmiyor ya da beğenmedim ifadelerini kullanmayacağım， doğrudan eleştireceğim。 Veba Geceleri normalde 2020 başlarında çıkacaktı ancak küresel salgın nedeniyle 2021 Mart ayını buldu yayımlanması。 Arka kapağında da vurgulandığı gibi o bir yıllık sarkmada metin elden geçirilmiş ve ne yazık ki romanın özellikle ilk yarısında çok hissediliyor bu。 Öyle ki bazı sayfalarda paragraflar bile birbirini uyumlu takip etmiyor。 Bu dağınıklık romanın bütününde de var。 Hâl böyle olunca atmosfer oluşmuyor ya da Pamuk bu sefer o sihirli atmosferini kuramıyor， bu da Pamuk'un （sorunlu olduğu iddia edilen） dil kullanımının göze batmasına ve adeta bir zımpara etkisi yaratmasına yol açıyor。 Açık olmak gerekirse， Veba Geceleri son yıllarda okurken bu denli acı çektiğim ikinci roman。 Kurgusal dağınıklık （misal， "Yıllar Sonra" başlıklı kapanışa ya da bu kadar uzun tutulmasına bu kapanışın ne gerek var） sadece biçim olarak değil içerik olarak da romana hâkim。 Başlardaki polisiye göndermeler romanın ortalarında tamamen unutuluyor。 Ta ki son bölümlere doğru kısaca nihayete erdirilene kadar （Başta çok anlam yükleyip sonda geçiştirmek oldu bu）。 Buna dair "Yıllar Sonra" isimli uzun bölümde birkaç gönderme daha。 Başka bir şey yok。 Pamuk'un Sherlock Holmes üzerinden Osmanlı'nın son dönemindeki Batılılaşma hareketlerine gönderme yaptığının farkındayım （ya da öyle anlıyorum） ama romandaki birçok metafor gibi bu da dostlar alışverişte görsün tarzı havada kalıyor。 Roman baştaki polisiye göndermelerden sonra uzun süre veba salgınına odaklanıyor ve tabiri caiz ise bu aşamada da kendi ipini çekiyor。 Birincisi， veba salgınının insanlara ve adaya yaptıklarını anlatmakta çok başarısız。 İkincisi de bu uzun kısmı o kadar çok gereksiz ayrıntıyla dolduruyor ki benim gibi sabırlı bir okuru bile darmadağın ediyor。 Bazı okurların iddia ettiği gibi Pamuk'un hayalinde yarattığı Minger Adası'nı okur için nefes alıp veren bir gerçekliğe dönüştürebildiğini de kabul etmiyorum。 Üstelik Minger Adası romanda bütün karakterlerin önünde ve aslında romanın sanki baş karakteri lâkin okurken bir an bile kendimi Minger Adası'nda hissetmedim， belki son kısımda。。。 Aksi olsa romanın atmosferi de sonucu da başka türlü olurdu zaten。 Dağınıklık， kurulamayan atmosfer， ihmal edilen ve geliştirilemeyen karakterler， derinleşmeyen sığ metaforlar。。。 Romanın sorunları saymakla bitmez。 Elbette veba salgını da başka bir metafor için kullanılıyor， yani "hasta adam" Osmanlı metaforu için。 Ancak， aynı Sherlock Holmes göndermesi gibi， bu da， üstelik romanda çok daha fazla yer kaplamasına rağmen， amacına varamıyor。 Bunların ardından romanın asıl hedefine ve niyetine geliyoruz üçüncü kısımda。 Salgının hazırladığı ortamda Osmanlı'dan ayrılan Minger （yani "Hasta Adam" Osmanlı'dan ortaya çıkan Türkiye Cumhuriyeti） anlatısı başlıyor。 Bu kısımda Türkiye Cumhuriyeti'nin kısa tarihine tanık olmak mümkün。 Ancak burada da iki sorun var: İlki， Orhan Pamuk'un riske girmeyip bu metafordan yeterince yararlanmaması。 Bildiğimiz denizlerde yüzmeyi tercih ediyor ve dişe dokunur şeyler yazmaktan kaçınıyor。 Bu kısımda sadece Atatürk konusunda， o da biraz zorluyor。 Komutan Kâmil üzerinden Atatürk'e ve cumhuriyetin ilk yıllarına yapılan eleştiriler， O'nu Harf Devrimi gibi （bir ara sanki gereksiz demeye getirdiği işlerle） reformlarla ilgilenip ülke yönetiminde sorumluluk almamakla， özellikle de baskı politikalarının sorumluluğunu astlarına yıkmakla， bazı kesimlere dağıttığı toprak vb。 varlıklarla eleştirdiği ânlar， bu kakofoni içinde kaynayıp gidiyor。 Türkiye Cumhuriyeti'ndeki sonraki dönemlerin metaforik eleştirileri daha sığ， romandaki birçok unsur gibi derinleşmeden ortada kalıyor。 En çok şaşırdığım da böyle metaforik bir romanın insanı， toplumu çok ihmâl etmiş olması。 Ne karakterlerinde ne de göndermelerinde insan ve toplum analizi görmek mümkün。 Bunu da （belki） anlatıcının başlarda metni tarih kitabı diye nitelemesiyle toparlamaya çalışıyor ama olmuyor。 Sonuçta Pamuk çok iyi bir fikirle yola çıkmış; "Hasta Adam" imgesi yaratıp bundan faydalanarak bağımsızlığını ilan eden Minger Adası üzerinden Türkiye Cumhuriyeti'nin başta batılılaşma olmak üzere birçok unsurunu dünden bugüne metaforlar içinde irdelemek istemiş。 Romandaki "tarih"， "tarihi roman" gibi tarihselci göndermelerin nedeni de bu。 Ancak hiçbir metafor yeteri kadar işlemiyor， derinleşmiyor。 "Hasta Adam" imgesi için kullanılan salgının romanda gereğinden fazla yer kaplaması， daha fenası bunun da atmosferinin kurulamamış olması， başlardaki Sherlock Holmes göndermelerinin ve polisiye unsurların simgelediği şeyden kopması ve hatta romanda da yerini kaybetmesi ile ortaya dağınık ve yolunu kaybetmiş bir metin çıkıyor。 Öyle ki bir noktadan sonra roman için yapılan araştırmalar romanın başat aktörüne dönüşürken bir romanda önemli olan bütün unsurlar da bunun figüranı olmaktan kurtulamıyor。 İlk defa bir Orhan Pamuk romanını okurken "Pamuk romanlarına başlıyorum ama bitiremiyorum" efsanesine dâhil olmaya bu kadar yaklaştım ve bu romanı bitirdiysem artık her romanı bitiririm diye düşünüyorum。 Bunca eleştiriyi okuduktan sonra hâliyle iç sesiniz niye 1 değil de 2 yıldız o zaman diyebilir: Çünkü az da olsa bazı bölümlerde （misal Sami Paşa'nın son saatlerini anlatan kısa bölümde） Pamuk'un sihirli atmosferini ve kalemini hissettim ve daha önemlisi fikrini， bunun için ortaya koyduğu araştırmayı ve bütün bunları metaforlarla ortaya koyma çabasını sevdim。 Ortaya çıkan sonucu ise hiç sevmedim。 。。。more

Orhan Pamuk’s new book， Nights of Plague， is， as the name suggests， mainly about the psychology of plague。 I think it is quite brilliant on this and full of well informed and meticulously imagined insight into what happens when people are confronted with the monstrous mortality of bubonic plague。The book is set in 1901， when social measures， especially quarantine， were all that rationally stood between populations and annihilation。 Nonetheless denial and resistance for ideological and religious Orhan Pamuk’s new book， Nights of Plague， is， as the name suggests， mainly about the psychology of plague。 I think it is quite brilliant on this and full of well informed and meticulously imagined insight into what happens when people are confronted with the monstrous mortality of bubonic plague。The book is set in 1901， when social measures， especially quarantine， were all that rationally stood between populations and annihilation。 Nonetheless denial and resistance for ideological and religious reasons were powerful forces。 For all our recent advances in medical knowledge， including our ability， if not will， to deliver vaccination solutions， we have seen people here responding to our current pandemic in very similar ways to those described in the book for the Mingherians。But the fictional island of Mingheria， which lies in the eastern Ottoman Empire somewhere between Istanbul and Alexandria， is about to tell a much more complex story about the nature of that empire in its declining years as well as about the rise of a small nation， perhaps having things in common with other small nations。We are expecting some complexity as we unravel who is in fact narrating this story during the course of the book。 This person， a woman， Mina Minghera， who seems to know the author we know， appears as a historian telling the story from the letters of one of the key protagonists。In that story， we also find people motivated by one objective can often find themselves doing something quite different， only to be remembered heroically for events which have often become unrecognisable after the protagonists have gone。 Sometimes the protagonists themselves fall under the spell of their own heroism。Turkish prosecutors are supposedly looking yet again at whether some of this fictional narrative is offensive to the memory of Kemal Ataturk or to the Turkish flag。 I do hope sales of the work will convince the authorities to stop making Turkiye look ridiculous themselves。This is a long book。 Maybe the pace could have picked up on occasion， but， for me， this is the most accessible of Pamuk’s novels and it is well worth the read。 。。。more
